Sanford fired
Oh, laffs. Wouldn’t it be funny, though, if we really could fire Gov. Mark Sanford? No drawn-out impeachment, just pull the trigger and call it a day. That would make the 2010 session a lot more interesting with a gubernatorial candidate in the executive instead of a discredited lamest of ducks. No, no, it wasn’t S.C.’s Sanford, but. UNLV football head coach Mike Sanford who was told he will be out of a job shortly.
The situation was clear entering this season: Mike Sanford needed to go at least 6-6 and take UNLV to a bowl game or he was out as the Rebels’ football coach.
Any chance of reaching those goals died in the snow in a 45-17 loss at Air Force on Saturday, and Sanford was told on Sunday he would not return next season.
Sanford, 54, will coach the Nov. 28 season finale against San Diego State at Sam Boyd Stadium and stay on until Dec. 5. UNLV has a bye this week.
His five-year record is 15-43. Sanford has never had a winning season, and the Rebels are 4-7 this year.
“It’s performance-based, absolutely,” UNLV interim athletic director Jerry Koloskie said. “We needed to have more success on the field, and that’s it.”
Sanford West got his time, after stops as an assistant and coordinator at places like Southern Cal, Notre Dame, Stanford, Utah and the San Diego Chargers. It was his stop at Utah, which went gangbusters in Urban Meyer’s last two years there, that got him the gig at UNLV. But, it’s all over now.
His most famous national moment when he totally lost his shit at the end of a game against Iowa State.
