Week 14
No. 1. Alabama
No. 2. Florida
No. 3. LSU
No. 4. Ole Miss
No. 5. Georgia
No. 6. Auburn
No. 7. Arkansas
No. 8. Tennessee
No. 9. South Carolina
No. 10. Kentucky
No. 11. Mississippi State
No. 12. Vanderbilt

Nothing changes from last week. Alabama punched its ticket to represent the nation’s best conference in the national championship game, Florida goes to the Sugar Bowl and everybody else gets a fun holiday football game and a bag of goodies. The season went by way too fast. We’re just glad the Crimson Tide is playing for it all this year.

Week 13
No. 1. Alabama
No. 2. Florida
No. 3. LSU
No. 4. Ole Miss
No. 5. Georgia
No. 6. Auburn
No. 7. Arkansas
No. 8. Tennessee
No. 9. South Carolina
No. 10. Kentucky
No. 11. Mississippi State
No. 12. Vanderbilt

Not too much change here. LSU regains the No. 3 spot thanks to its overtime heroics versus Arkansas, and Carolina jumps Kentucky as the ninth-best team in the conference. Mississippi State should be lauded for capturing the Egg Bowl, but one win over Ole Miss doesn’t change the fact that the Bulldogs are one of only two teams in the SEC that aren’t bowl eligible.

Week 11
No. 1. Alabama
No. 2. Florida
No. 3. Ole Miss

No. 5. Georgia
No. 6. Auburn
No. 7. Arkansas
No. 8. Tennessee
No. 9. Kentucky
No. 10. South Carolina
No. 11. Mississippi State
No. 12. Vanderbilt

Ole Miss finally jumps back to its place as the third-best team in the conference by knocking off LSU, though the win could as easily be credited to the poor clock management of Tiger coach Les Miles. As well, here’s where Carolina falls to its realistic position in the conference. By Tennessee defeating Vanderbilt, the Gamecocks are now officially in fifth place in the SEC East — certainly not where coach Steve Spurrier expected to have his team in his fifth year leading the squad.

Who, oh who wants to go to the Chick-fil-A Bowl? Really, the only changes going on relate to positioning for the mid-tier bowl games.

Not too much changed this week, but Carolina took a fall. Getting owned by a mediocre Arkansas team will do that.

It was an off week for Alabama, and Florida took that opportunity to beat up on a hapless Georgia defense. And, as we all know, the Ginger Ninja can’t play well during the daytime. The biggest jumps in the poll go to Auburn and Tennessee. The Vols, over the past three weeks, seem to have figured out what was wrong and proved it against Carolina, which slipped to sixth. Also, Auburn recovered from its slide and figured out how to score points and play defense at the same time.

Not much changes here. Auburn slips a spot because of the LSU blowout, but otherwise the field held steady through a weekend of close games.

Tennessee v Alabama

Yeah, yeah, we have Auburn ahead of Kentucky, despite the recent result. Considering the amount of losses between the middle of the pack and the bottom-dwellers, you have to make a pick and just run with it. We’re staying with the top four, even though LSU is far from perfect and Carolina is having trouble on offense and got owned on defense by one player — a sophomore — and five offensive linemen. But, overall, we have more belief in Carolina getting by with a serviceable offense and an otherwise good defense than Georgia, which has neither.

What we seemed to learn over the past weekend is that anybody can be had, but it’s harder for some than others. If you’re a team in one of the BCS conferences, all you have to do is win, survive and advance. And hope that the computers don’t fuck you in the end (say hello to 2004 Auburn).

As for everyone else, if you already have two or more losses, you’re not winning the conference. So, the rivalry games — typically the most important part of the season — are that much more important.

There is some moving about, and Carolina jumps up to No. 4 by simple inertia. As cynically expected, Georgia and Auburn completely face-planted on Saturday. Anyway, the real news of the day is Alabama moving up to No. 2 in the AP Poll (Waa waaa waaaaahhhh — Big XII is teh suxx0rz).

For the rest of the week, we’ll be watching the irrational exuberance of Carolina fans like a cat eying a mouse. “We beat Bama in ’01 and ’04! It can happen again!” “We has defense!” “Garcia pisses excellence!” Hahaha. Gamecocks, you have no idea the shitstorm you’re stepping into. By the way, the game will be at 7:45 p.m. on ESPN, so the denizens of Bryant-Denny Stadium will be totally hammered by kickoff. Over 90,000 ‘housed fans, a top-tier running attack and the nation’s best defense will be greeting USC in Tuscaloosa. Enjoy the trip. Try the barbecue.

We’re moving up Auburn to the No. 3 spot because the Tigers have shown that they can win, albeit with an at times-porous defense. Really, there’s a decent drop-off between Florida and Auburn, and another drop-off between Auburn and the tandem of LSU and Georgia. And then there’s Carolina, which plays just good enough for some surprise wins, but we’d lay down good money to say there will be some surprise losses down the line — Kentucky, Tennessee and Clemson are obvious candidates, not to mention expected losses to Alabama and Florida. After that, it’s a crapshoot for the rest. What’s the difference between Kentucky and Ole Miss? Ole Miss hasn’t played the Tide and the Gators, and Kentucky hasn’t played Carolina. After five weeks, these teams both looks like they can score and play decent defense, but neither has created a true identity yet.
